Goal Setting in Kindergarten {FREEBIE too!}

One of my favorite parts of teaching kindergarten is how excited my students are about learning. Learning new things is exciting for my little friends and they love a challenge. One way that I try to empower my students is by holding them accountable for their own learning. We do this by setting goals and monitoring their learning throughout the year.

Once your kiddos start setting goals and reaching for them, they are hooked. My kids get so excited when they move to a new reading level…cause they are one step closer to reaching their goals. I use this chart in my classroom to help my students visually see how they are progressing through the reading levels. My kids learn to celebrate one another, because they come to understand the hard work it takes to reach their goals and are proud when a classmate has done just that!

I find that one of the most important things when setting goals with kindergarten students, is that they need to revisit their goals frequently to self-monitor and keep track of their accomplishments. And yes, when there are accomplishments it is very important to CELEBRATE their success. All students make learning gains, maybe not at the same rate, but they all do…and they deserve to be recognized for their hard work!

Another way that my students track and monitor their learning is through their Kindergarten goal book. At the beginning of the school year each student records what they know, then throughout the year they get to update their progress. This book helps them have a very clear understanding of what they will learn in kindergarten and how they are progressing towards those expectations. Taking out the goal book is always one of my students’ favorite activities, especially at the end of the year when they get to see how far they have come since the beginning of the school year. {Read more about how I use these GOAL BOOKS here!} These are a great tool to use during parent conferences, too!

My students are also accountable for their learning during writing time. During writers’ workshop, my students conference with me. During these conferences, the students decide what they would like to work on to become a better writer. The students use the chart below to help them be responsible for their own learning and deliberate in their writing improvement. The next time I conference with the students, they are very excited to tell me what actions they are taking to reach their goal. {Read more about how I use the WRITING GOALS here!} If you want to try out this approach in your writing conferences, try out this writing conference checklist to help you out! (I use these conference checklist in parent conferences as well!)

To keep the students motivated, I try to throw in some fun ways to set goals. I use these craftivities after we finish up units of studies in reading to help reflect on what we have learned and to look forward to new goals that we have as readers.

Teaching kids how to set goals at a young age will help them stay focused and determined. I know that I am so grateful that both my parents and my teachers instilled this mindset in me from such a young age. I feel like I was more prepared as I got older to be responsible and independent. May we give our students that same confidence as they leave our classrooms!

I hope this year you and your kindergarten friends set goals and strive to reach them!

It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like...Thanksgiving!

At the end of this week we started all things Turkey! Bring on Thanksgiving!
We read the book Thanks for Thanksgiving and then created our Thankful Turkeys!

I loved hearing and seeing my kids really think about what they are thankful for. Of course it melts my heart when they say that they are thankful for me...but even better when they talk about how they are thankful for each other! LOVE IT!

A parent gave me some s'more candy corn for the kids...so Friday afternoon seemed like the perfect time to bring it out and do some math!
We created Turkey Number Bonds. The kids had a BLAST!

Next week we will learn all about the First Thanksgiving and create these cuties!

It's time to go get my booty in shape! BOOT CAMP!! Have a great weekend!!!

End of Seuss, Zoo and St. Patty's Day!

So I haven't had the chance to share the last of our Seuss fun. On Friday we finished up our Seuss unit with Funky Food- Green Eggs and Ham! The kids cooked everything- they even cracked the eggs- they did pretty good! I was impressed!! After we enjoyed the funky food we did a few activities...

We really didn't have too much time though because we had our field trip to the ZOO! How much do your little friends LOVE the zoo? You would have thought we were at Disney! I put together some activities to get us ready for the zoo and as a quick follow-up when we returned (we arrived back to school a little late so we actually did some of the follow-up activities on Monday).

We thought about what animals live at the zoo and animals that do not live at the zoo, then we sorted the animal pictures. We read an interactive emergent reader and wrote about what we hope we saw at the zoo.

When you go to the zoo on a field trip do you have you class complete a scavenger hunt? This is always a big hit!

When we got back we shared about what we found at the zoo.

We even pretended we were zookeepers and wrote about what it would be like if we ran the zoo!

If you are interested you can check out this mini-pack HERE!

Tomorrow we are going to create this little number! Fun times!

Off to bed...this time change is really messing with me!! Sweet dreams...

Five Flashback for Friday!...Or Saturday?!?!

I'm linking up with Kacey for Five for Friday and Amanda for a Friday Flashback!

I know it is Saturday, but yesterday I was exhausted!! I mean so tired that I couldn't even keep my eyes open! This past week has been filled with conferences, data chats, meetings, the 100th day of school and lots of fun activities! I am ready for a lazy Saturday...maybe some cleaning, shopping and then just laying on the couch and catching up on the real housewives of BH and ATL! :) I know you can't believe I watch that- I won't lie, I'm hooked!!

Here is all the good stuff that has been going on this week...
This week we finished up our nonfiction unit of study in both reading and writing. My students amaze me at how they really hear and listen to what I'm saying. When I say things like "Good readers read to learn new things." or "Good readers ask questions while they are reading." Sometimes I wonder if they "get it"...but then I am always excited when we have our sharing time and they say "I was a good reader when..." Ahhh! I just love it! Here is an anchor chart that I used continuously throughout our nonfiction unit of study.
The mini posters come from here.

On Wednesday was our 100th day of school. The kids had a blast! It was a jam packed day...I had parents tell me their kids were pooped after school! :) (So was I!!)
Many activities came from here.

On Wednesday one of my students brought in the book The Elf on the Shelf to read with the class. Since we were so busy with the 100th day activities we didn't get to read it that day. So as I was prepping for Thursday/ decorating for Valentine's Day an idea popped into my head. So I wrote this note to my class
and spread little hearts all over the room and floor. On Thursday morning when the kids came in and saw the hearts, they met our little cupid. We read Elf on the Shelf and I told them that this cupid was the  elf's cousin. You know they all went crazy! :) We named him Jack Sparrow!

We started our Valentine's Day Centers. Fun times! :) I love seeing how the students have become so independent!!
These centers come from  here.
Falling in Love with Learning {ELA & Math Activities Aligned to Common Core}

During science and social studies we have started our dental health study. This will be sprinkled in throughout the BUSY month. My kids made these fun toothbrushes on Friday after watching a Brainpop Jr., reading nonfiction dental health readers and brainstorming.
This activity and craftivity are part of  Sparkly & Shiny {A Dental Health Mini-Unit} here.

I hope you enjoy your Saturday! I know I will! Check back tomorrow to see what I plan to do this coming week!

Winter Fun

I feel like I could start every post with "I have been so busy" or "time just seems to be flying by"! Am I the only one who feels like that!?!?

The past few weeks we have been exploring polar animals. We learned so much about polar bears and penguins! The students were so surprised to learn that polar bears and penguins don't live in the same place! Learning about these animals was the perfect way to finish up our nonfiction unit of study. We made these fun craftivities to record our learning!

Find these craftivities on TPT here.

The kids faces were priceless when they saw that they were going to make a penguin! You would have thought that I was giving them a special reward. Don't you just love when learning is their reward!?!?

Of course we also had to learn about what other animals do in the winter. So we used Phil the Groundhog as our starting point. The students all wanted a pet groundhog! How funny!

Find this Groundhog Day Unit on TPT here.

Check back tomorrow to see an update about our visiting Cupid, the 100th day and qr codes!,

Happy almost weekend!
